You might have asked this question to yourself,
WHAT SHOULD I SELECT, DHCP or PPPOE? Let us differentiate first the two common types of Internet connection that you will encounter on setting up a new modem or router. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, because, without the proper settings, even If you spend hours and hours on typing in your username and password on your modem or router, it will not work! Settings should be configured properly, so your modem or router can authenticate itself on your Internet Service Providers server. So, don't waste your time, read the things below, before calling your Technical Support hotline. Here we go...
WHAT SHOULD I SELECT DHCP or PPPoE ON MY MODEM / ROUTER SETUP PAGE?
What is DHCP? -Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is an Internet or Network Protocol that are commonly used on networks. It is also known as, the AUTOMATIC CONFIGURATION protocol. It is often use, if you have a Modem already configured using PPPoE or Authentication.
What is PPPoE? -Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet. Is a kind of Internet or Network Protocol that is commonly used with the Internet Service Provider (ISP). This protocol allows one computer or modem to communicate with the Internet Service Provider, commonly used to AUTHENTICATE the CONNECTION.
Now, the question is, why do we have to know these protocols? Because, If your Modem / Router is not properly configured, your Internet connection will definitely not work. The first thing you have to know Is the current MODEM you have. One way for you to check it, If you connect your Modem straight to the computer, and, it gets you online. Then, most probably, your existing modem is using authentication to connect to the Internet or PPPoE. You can also check If your modem is giving you an IP ADDRESS on Default Gateway. If that's the case, you would just probably need to set your router as DHCP or AUTOMATIC CONFIGURATION. If you are still not sure, you could also check it with your Internet Service helpdesk. Now, If you are using a 3rd Party Device, and they don't want to help you. Don't whine or get frustrated, since, If it's not their product, most probably, they are not trained for it. Just make sure, that you ask them If your modem is using DHCP or PPPoE. If they say, that it is using PPPoE, then, all you have to do is ask for your LOGIN username and password information, very often, it's also your email account username and password with your Internet Service Provider. So, you can either configure the modem/router yourself, or just simply call the Router Manufacturer technical support for further assistance.
Ex.
A. MODEM (using PPPoE) ---> ROUTER (using DHCP) ----->Computer
B. MODEM (PPPoE is disabled or On Bridge Mode) ---->ROUTER (using PPPoE) ----->Computer
NOTE: If you are still confused. You just have to remember that If your Modem is using AUTHENTICATION or PPPoE, then you just have to select AUTOMATIC CONFIGURATION or DHCP on your router setup. Or, the other way around. READ THE MANUAL or just get a MODEM/ROUTER from your ISP, so, they could help you on how to set it up.

Hi, I've tried out both configuration A and B (as pointed out by you in your example) for my network and they both worked. My question now becomes, which of the two should I opt for? I mean, what are the advantages or drawbacks of choosing one over the other? Please help me to choose. Thanks.
Hi, Anonymous! There are different kinds of Modems and Routers. Honestly, it depends on your modem and router compatibility. For example, based on my experience, there are some models of Motorola modem which work excellent if its on PPPoE, while it could give you a very unstable connection if it is hooked up with a (DHCP) Wireless Router (regardless of the brand). The solution for that is to simply revert the process. If it's causing you Intermittent connection, better put the modem on a Bridge mode, and just let the router handle the PPPoE. Give it at least a week, and observe if you'll get the same issue. But, if you'll personally ask me, I would prefer putting the modem on a bridge mode, and configuring the PPPoE on the Router. Since, most Routers nowadays have a very user-friendly GUI or Software Configuration Page. If it works that way, then good! If not, just switch the settings around, and keep the best settings for your home network. I hope it helps! Thanks for dropping by! Have a great day!
Thanks! In that case, I guess it simply boils down to one's personal preference then. Nevertheless, I'll still try and monitor both setups out for a week to see if I could sniff out any differences between them. :)
